A Step to Overcoming Fear
June 29, 2011 – 1:47 amTo have fear is to be afraid. The definition of afraid, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is to be filled with concern or regret over an unwanted situation.
I have struggled with fear. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m alone. However, my fear has lessened in the past several months and so I’ll share with you what God showed me and my hope is that you too (if you struggle with fear), will overcome it.
I had and at times still have, the tendancy to think about the “what if’s”. What if this happens and then that happens. What if someone does this and so the ones I love do such and such. What if, what if, what if. I’d create scenerios in my head of things that never had happened and I’d find myself fearing that my greatest fears would come to pass. That’s not healthy! I was afraid… I was filled with concern over an unwanted situation. And in my case, an illegitimate concern.
Then, God revealed something to me through His Word, and my life has changed because of it. Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.” A well known verse, right? Well, when I read it one day several months ago, the words “whatever is true” popped off the page and God showed me why I had such fear (concern) in my life. I thought about the what if’s so much, things that were not true, and because of it I was afraid. God tells us in His Word to think on truth but I was doing the opposite. So, I began to look at the things in my life I had fear over and realized that much of my concern came soley because I wasn’t acknowledging the truth, but rather, wasting time on the what if’s.

Instead of thinking, “what if this happens or what if that” we should be thinking on things that are true! The enemy loves to distract us and take our minds off of truth and try to focus them on things that will cause our heart to fear. We can overcome this tactic of the enemy. Do what the Word says and think on things that are true.
When I began to focus on truth rather than the what if’s, I entered into greater peace.
God wants you to rest in His love and in His truth. So, stop thinking on things that cause you to fear and start thinking on the goodness and faithfulness of God.
